Santa is a very busy man, but he is nothing if not efficient. In order to deliver all those toys to all those girls and boys, he spreads his travels over a few days. It would just be too stressful to try and fit it all into one night. It's a big world, after all, and Santa's already over-worked heart cannot handle any unnecessary stress.

So first, he shows up at our house. And Millie is ready.

She asked for a Minnie costume and was please to see that Santa got the memo, even though she kept forgetting to send him a list. Thank goodness he has WiFi.

It was finally time to add to our family. Just before Christmas we adopted a tiny, 10 week old Shitzu and Dachshund mix rescue puppy. She was named Skyy (yes, after the vodka) but I chose Ivy instead.

We surprised Millie with Ivy a day after returning from Iowa, where we had spent Christmas weekend. She was delighted, but it's been a tough transition. I don't know how you moms do it when both kids want something from you at the same time. Millie has been especially needy and tired from being at Spanish Camp all day, so between that and letting Ivy out every hour while she is being potty trained, I am exhausted and a bit stressed but it's been really, really fun. Ivy is adorable, sweet and cuddly. She plays hard and then crashes for hours, preferably while touching some part of you. She has been sleeping through the night with her head on our pillows and has had very few accidents in the house. She walks nicely along side me and seems to be responding very well to simple commands like "no bite!"

We are very excited about Ivy joining our family. I hope she gets to meet all of you soon.

Halloween Week

Evidently, Halloween lasts for at least a week when you have a four year old. The festivities began last weekend with a Halloween themed birthday party, then Zoo Boo, Kowalski's and Byerly's Boo Bashes, Preschool trunk or treat, the yearly pumpkin party at Rumspringa, and finally, the actual Halloween night party and trick or treating. It's was all a blast, but I must admit I woke up this morning relieved to be done with the cupcake costume for a while.

A is for Apples

This year we've managed to squeeze three apple orchard visits into the summer-like fall. Minnetonka Orchard was nice, and had delicious Honey Crisp apples, but we were appalled by their high prices. Pine Tree in White Bear Lake turned out to be a bit of a disappointment since they are not a pick-your-own orchard and there was not much in terms of activities either. But it was a beautiful setting and a lovely day, so it was nice regardless. The three of us went back to our old stand-by, Afton Orchard, last weekend. So did, apparently, most of the state of Minnesota. But even with the crowds, it was so much fun. Hay rides, pumpkin and apple picking, cider pressing demonstrations, cow barrel train rides, a huge playground, and of course llamas, sheep and goats, oh my. Afton definitely offers the most entertainment bang for your five bucks. Plus a luscious fresh pressed cider float makes even the worst of crowds tolerable.

There was a musician there and he had set up an extra guitar and mic for the kids to "join him." He also had a daughter named Millie and had written a song for her, so naturally we bought the CD.

Usually Mom is relgated to being the camera, which is exactly where I like it. But when a pro like my friend Tom Dunn is around, I can be coaxed into posing with my little Cat in the Hat ballerina.

First day of Preschool

Which was also the last day of summer, was a full, fun day.

After school, it was time to enjoy the last few moments of heat. Coco and Elliot came over to frolick in the Huth Family Water Park.

Last Day

I wrote this long, elaborate post, detailing all the wonderful things we did on our last day at the fair, but then modern technology failed me and I lost everthing.

So, in short, we had a lovely last day, just the three of us and a bunch of baby animals. We saw it all, we smelled it all, we ate it all. And now we count the days until the next fair. Back to reality.

Days five and six

I decided that Millie and I needed the day off from the fair Wednesday. We spent doing the day doing close to nothing, and by Thursday morning we were eager to get back. Even the projected 100 degree plus heat index didn't deter us.

We got to the fair bright and early and had a lovely time with Alissa and crew. We bumped into Sarah, Eve, and Graham, which made the morning that much more fun. By Noon the heat had caught up with us so we bid farewell to the fair for the moment and I took Millie swimming at the Roseville pool. After Tony got home I went back and met Alissa and Sarah for a girls' night. It was a lovely evening and we indulged in all kinds of yumminess, like sweet corn ice cream and honey lemonade. And the calorie count continues to mount...

DAY SIX

Day six started once again with Alissa, Zach, and G-Jo, and later we met up with Angela and Grace. After Millie and I got a quick break at home, we returned to the fair with Tony, and met up with Jackie, Dave, Josie, Gus, and Levi. Best night of the fair ever. We had a blast!

Day Four

Whew. Here we go again...

Tuesday's visit to the fair with Tracy and Jon was really fun, in spite of the constant drizzle. But I knew when I told Millie that I was going to take her home for the evening and she didn't argue that she needs a day off. So today we are relaxing at home and catching our breath so we can be ready for the 90 degree plus day tomorrow.

Day Three

Monday was day three at the fair for Millie. After spending the night with her Saba and Safta (so Tony and I could go to the fair, of course), Saba and Safta joined us for another full day.

State Fair 2011

First, I apologize for not posting immediately about the first two days of the fair. I know my audience is all about instant gratification, and I feel I have let you all down. In my defense, I was extremely nauseous on Thursday night, having consumed more grease, fat, and sugar in one day than I had in almost a year. I didn't even eat that much, but I guess it was just too much for my now-cleansed system to handle. Since then I've been having computer issues. Hopefully it will work today.

So without further adieu, here are photos of Millie and crew on the first two days of the Great Minnesota Get Together.

First bite of the 2011 Fair: Zeppole. She handed it back to me after the first bite and requested Tiny Tim Donuts instead.

There was a science fair at Carousel Park where Millie got to add to a "City of the Future" display. She chose to create a bus, which slowly morphed into a flying bus. Hey, it's the future!

DAY TWO

Summer fun with Yonatan

Last time our friends visited from Israel, it was the dead of winter and all they saw of Minnesota was the wall of snow on my parents' deck, and the Mall of America.

Fast forward six months, and we finally got to show off our beloved state in all her summery glory. This time we hit all the hot spots (get it?), like Teddy Bear Park in the always-impressive Stillwater, Highland Park Pool, and of course Como Town and Zoo. Add a few afternoons of running through the slip & slide in our front yard, and you've got a much friendlier Minnesota than they met in January.

Grandparents' Camp

Last week, my amazing, brave in-laws had five of the cousins over to their house for a few days, no parents allowed. Millie got to create wonderful memories with her family, like fishing, swimming, museums, and lots of quality Barbie time with cousin Kate. It was hard to send her off, but I am so glad we did. She is already talking about the next "Grandparents' Camp."

On the 4th of July, we were invited to a BBQ, where Millie met her new BFF Ben. Ben is six days younger than Millie, so she taught him the ropes on stickers, and he taught her a thing or two about berry picking. Here they are in all their cuteness.

Happy belated 4th of July

As we've done for the last couple of years, this 4th was celebrated at the St. Anthony Park "parade", which includes Dentist Paul, the boyscouts, two pre-schools, and approximately 30 citizens of the retirement home, all dressed up in their Sunday best and rolled down Como avenue in their wheelchairs with wool blankets on their laps.

After the parade ends, the crowd joins in and we all walk down to Langford Park for a picnic. It's all very Norman Rockwell, or Stepford Wives, depending on your mood.

Bad news and good news

It's been raining bunnies and monkeys (just trying to be more original) but at least it's warm out. It is late June after all. Below are a few sample pics of summer in The World Of Millie.

As birthday month continued, Millie got her fill of cake at various events.

It was chilly but fun when we rode the carousel at Como for Coco's birthday.

After Coco, it was Zach's turn. I didn't take any pictures at his party, but his mom took some fun shots at Choo Choo Bob's.

We decided to make Millie's birthday fairly low-key. Tony took the day off and we did whatever she wanted, which included Como Town, the zoo, mini-golf, the play ground, Snuffy's, and cake with the neighbors.

First, gift opening in the morning (which explains the nakedness, sort of.)

Then off to Como Town, where we got a season membership. Millie was a bit apprehensive about the first ride. I would be too, check out Aladin's creepy smile.

I think we have this same picture from every year, except this time, she is riding solo. Yippy!

Mini golf at 80 mph winds takes on a whole new degree of difficulty, but is no less fun.

Next, it was all about Eve. For her party, Eve requested that Millie and Lillian join her for a swim party. So swimming we went, at a little indoor water park close to home. Then we hit the park for a delicious picnic lunch and some Dora cupcakes.

Last but not least, it was Tony's birthday today. Here is his surprise cake, which Millie kept a secret, believe it or not. It's an Oreo ice cream cake. It was divine, if I may say so myself.

Birthday Season

Starting with Coco's birthday two weeks ago, we are now officially emersed in birthday season. We were thrilled to celebrate David's big 5 with him on Saturday, in a themed castle party. Costumes, castle cake, swords, shields, even fire spewing flying dragons, what more can a boy want?

The food was delish, the company delightful (always great to see you Mary!) and Millie cherished the opportunity to wear her pink flower girl dress and carry a wand, of course. David, you were the loveliest knight ever.

Supposedly, Spring is here, and with it, the birth of a variety of edible...I mean, adorable animals such as piglets, calfs, and teeny tiny chicks. This week we headed off to the Minnesota Zoo to view, pet, and feed the babes. It was a lovely day, so we also got to have a picnic and play in the impressive outdoor play areas at the zoo. It was a great outing, complete with a monorail ride, of course. We were with Zach, after all!

The sun finally came out in time for Easter. We had a lovely brunch at my sister-in-law's, where Millie got to participate in her second hunt of the weekend. Since it was just her and her cousin Julia, their buckets did in fact runneth over.

This week we are dog sitting and we couldn't be more excited. This is Mini, whom Millie always refers to as "my dog," even though we get to watch her once a year. We don't know what breed Mini is, but Tony calls her Monkey Dog, and I just think she is adorable.

After an amazing nine days in Scottsdale, Arizona, we are back just in time for spring. Today we pulled out the deck furniture and enjoyed a lovely, sunny afternoon outside. It was not the ultra dry 87 degrees we had gotten spoiled with this past week, but it was good enough for a cheerful welcome home.

So happy to be in the sun with Grandma and Grandpa.

That's the title of an Israeli children's song. It means "Little Jonathan" and it been playing in my head ever since our friends visited last weekend. They made the long trip from Israel because Nirit, my childhood friend and distant cousin, works for a company in Israel that was recently purchased by 3M. What are the odds? She had a business retreat up North, and brought along her mother and son, Yonatan.

Yonatan is two days younger than Millie, and as sweet as can be. The kids got along fine for the most part, even though they didn't understand a word the other said. In spite of the cold (hey, welcome to Minnesota!) we carted them all over the Twin Cities, from the Mall of America, to the Como Zoo, to Target. And of course, Java Train.

Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Today we went to Jon's 4th birthday party at Edinborough. What a perfect place for a child's birthday in the dead of winter. It's sunny and filled with green trees, which is more than we can say for any where else in Minnesota currently. So it was a lovely break from reality, a chance for the kids to run off some steam, and an opportunity for me to see Tracy and her family- a win-win. Black and blue bruise on Millie's cheek not-with-standing.

After much thought and research, we have added a four-legged friend to our fold. The timing of this addition was actually a spontaneous decision. We went to the Humane Society "just to look" at guinea pigs, but after playing with bunnies and puppies, we fell in love with Norm the guinea pig. I was smitten with the big guy right away, and my parents agreed he was a great pet. Millie just wanted to take SOMETHING home. So after a quick call to Tony (so that he could feel he had some say. Ha!) we bought a truck-load of guinea pig paraphernalia and took Norm home.

Thanksgiving week means, apparently, Pajama Day at preschool! All the kids (and the teachers) wore PJ's and watched a movie while snacking on popcorn and lemonade. Made me wish I was three.

Good Apple Hunting

This weekend we went to Apple Jack's Orchard in Delano. Apparently, this was not an original idea, the place was packed. But it was still wonderful. They have so much going on there: Cow barrel rides, pony rides, a mini zoo, a corn maze, tractor rides, apple cannons, pumpkin patches, raspberry picking, hay stacks to climb, live music, a restaurant, bakery, gift shop, and a playground. Apples, however, not so much.

Due to an early spring frost, most local orchards are experiencing an apple shortage. No kidding. There were four, count 'em, four trees with apples on them. They were Liberty apples, which are delicious and teeny tiny, perfect for little hands. No apple pie this year, but we have a bag full of snacking apples for Millie.

The day was perfect, sunny and cool in the morning, then really warming up later in the day. We picked several lovely pumpkins and just enough raspberries for Millie to snack on in the huge complimentary wagon we were pulling. It just so happened that very day was the Giant Pumpkin Weigh In! And giant they were. Lunch was cider brats at a lovely picnic area by the river. And there is even a train going by every once in a while. Put some suspenders on Tony and it was a Norman Rockwell painting.

The very popular cow ride. We based our choice of orchards on whether or not they had one of these. I am thinking of building one in the back yard.

Today was the quintessential Autumn day, bright and crisp, like a fresh-picked apple. Zach and his family invited us to join them for a train ride in Osceola, Wisconsin. The drive there is beautiful. After a stop for coffee and a walk by some sweet little waterfalls, we boarded the Marine on the St. Croix train. I think Millie's favorite part was handing over her ticket to the fancy schmancy conductor. She sat without breathing with her hands cupped in her lap while he punched four punches (don't know why) into her ticket. The rest of the time she bounced off the walls, except when she was mauling her future husband.

Monday was quiet, gorgeous, and filled with fun, food and friends. Just like the gods intended.

Day Two

Note to self: Do not go to the fair on the first Friday.

Too many fat people wearing "I survived Anorexia" T-shirts, too many toddlers on leashes (and by the way, parents, a leash with a fuzzy teddy bear on it is still a LEASH), and entirely too many teenagers wearing outfits that should be reserved for a Prince concert, or hooking. Add to that poor Tony's nasty allergies and Millie's nasty mood, and we would have been better off going out to Famous Dave's for dinner.

Not to sound too negative, I will say there were a couple of lovely hightlights. Millie got to go down the giant slide with her daddy and two of her BFF's, Lucy and Betty. We had a great time at the Little Farm Hands area where it was nice and quiet and where Millie picked out a box of cereal which kept her surprisingly content. And it was an extra special treat hanging out with Sarah, Mike, and GORGEOUS Kaelani.

But next year, we're skipping the first two days. Just sayin'.

I have a creeping suspicion that the next few years at the fair will be limited to Kiddy Midway and the cow barn.

We don't know the girl in the foreground, but she was very sweet to Millie on the giant bee ride.

Woodbury vacation

This weekend, a few of Tony's family members gathered at his sister's home for some summer fun. It all started with a visit to the Washington County Fair to meet the cow we will be feasting on during the winter months. Cousin Andrew won Grand Champion with one of his cows, so hopefully that's the one that will end up in my freezer. Back at the Bowman residence, it was swimming, t-ball, drawing, playdough, and some wrestling with Uncle Brad that kept the kids busy and oh so happy.

Millie asked to and was allowed to stay over night Saturday, her first sleep-over other than at my parents'. She cried when I called, but otherwise was unmoved when we walked in the door. We got to have coffee and adult conversation while the kids kept themselves occupied. Tony even finished the entire Sunday paper! It was miraculous, it was glorious, it was heaven.

Millie loves, loves, loves her cousins. I cannot believe what an amazing family I married into. Even if they do have to live in Woodbury ;)

We're so crunchy

Our second camping trip was um...eventful. Friday's weather was beautiful, but of course we spent more of the evening was spent setting up the camper. Saturday started out lovely as well. After a relaxing coffee in a camping chair (nothing better) we hit the beach. It was gorgeous, and the girls had a blast. Unfortunately the clouds began to rumble and we headed back to camp. After a couple of hours in our individual pop-ups, the girls were going a bit stir crazy. The decision was made to go into town for dinner. "Town" turned out to be Onamia, and dinner was at the one and only diner. It was very nice really, and the girls were perfectly behaved. It was nice to be safe and warm during the storms. We even had pie!

After dinner, our friends made a last minute decision to stop at Urgent Care on the way home to have someone take a quick look at Lucy's foot, which was swelling up like a balloon animal due to bug bites. This turned out to be serendipitous, because we got to ride out the ensuing the tornado watch in a cozy waiting room complete with a t.v., toys, coffee, and cushy furniture, instead of on the bathroom floor with 100 other people at the campsite. Thanks Lucy!

It poured for the rest of the night, but Sunday was glorious. We packed up and went for a lovely walk down to another beach. The girls frolicked and played in the sand. It was hard to leave, but I was ready to sleep in a (relatively) sand-free bed.

If you wonder if we enjoyed our trip, the answer is in the fact that next year's camping trip has already been booked. They may make a granola chick out of me yet.

Tonight was the first night of Tee Ball, but due to the depressing weather we've been having, "practice" was moved indoors for the littlest of "players." And by practice I mean: meet the coach, run around the gym twice, roll the ball anywhere but where you're supposed to, and stare blankly into space. Also, look ridiculously adorable in your oversized, can-be-seen-from-space orange t-shirt and one-size-fits-all cap.

Big Birthday Party

For the third year in a row, our six Jelly Beans got together for a joint birthday party. Although the skies were dark and misty at times, no one seemed to mind. As usual, the food was great, the company even better. We are so lucky to have found all of you.

The craziest part is that Greta, Georgia, and Graham weren't even here yet!

Tonight was the ECFE party, as most of you who read this blog already know (because you were there.) It's kind of a big deal for us, since we won't be continuing with ECFE next year. It was fun as usual, with lots of good food and visiting with friends. The highlight, of course, was getting to meet and hold teeny tiny baby Lillian. Was Millie ever that small?

"My actually birthday party"

Today was Millie's birthday and it was spent enjoying the glorious May weather. We went to Teddy Bear Park with Zach and his family, then a lovely picnic by the river. We watched the boats go by and the bridge go up and down. After a nice long nap on the couch (yep, all three of us) several friends stopped by for cake. Millie got a few more gifts: some beautiful outfits and best of all, a dilly bar!

When you turn three, you end your day with a pink dilly bar. It's the law.

Then the neighbor brought over rice krispy treats, with tiny colored candy on top. Good God.

I think...I've had...too much...sugar.

Sunday in Arizona

Today we went for a nice long walk on the canal, met Grandma and Grandpa for breakfast at another favorite, Saddle Ranch Chop House (which I later found out was voted the number one place to pick up a one night stand in Arizona. Nifty.), then Mommy got some alone time to shop and meander while Daddy and Millie went swimming for three hours. Millie was literally in the water for over two and a half hours of that.

Since Millie has been going to bed at 10 p.m. and waking up at 6:30 a.m., we decided to skip nap today. Instead we went to a park with a playground and a gazillion geese. After dinner on the patio and ice cream with Grandpa, it was back to reality watching some crazy Republicans on T.V. Sigh. Bed time came early, for both Millie and Mommy.

Today we were on our own for the morning, so after an early swim, we went to lunch at Dos Gringos and then a nice leisurely walk by a new waterfront development. I made sure and stop at one of my favorites, Olive + Ivy, for some late afternoon gelato.

Yesterday began with a trip to the Train Park, then a lunch of Sprinkles cupcakes and frozen yogurt. Yum. After a nice swim at the pool with her new friend Maddie, Millie crashed for a couple of hours and Mom and Dad got to go out on a date.

If anyone is ever in Scottsdale, I highly recommend Blanco Tacos + Tequila. Amazing food, great service, and super hip yet relaxed atmosphere. Double Yum.

Arizona Day 2

There is a little known Arizona law that states you must visit Old Town Scottsdale at least once during your visit. We managed to leave without buying any souvenirs, which means we'll have to go back.

Arizona Day 1

Yesterday was our first full day in Arizona. It was in the low 80's, not a cloud in the sky with a slight breeze. Perfection.

We started the day with a walk down the canal, which is located behind the condo. What can be better than a walk and frozen yogurt?

Mall of America

On Friday we officially ushered in my birthday weekend with a trip to the Mall of America to be tourists for a day. We had never been to Underwater Adventures, and it was worth the wait (and every penny of the hefty fee, even with a coupon). It really is amazing. Afterwards the plan was to have a fun-filled lunch at Rainforest Cafe, isn't that the touristy thing to do? But after we were sat directly under the faux flying monkeys, Millie asked several times to "go somewhere quieter." She even suggested we go home for lunch. So we apologized to the friendly waitress and headed up to Bubba Gump's. It was nice and quiet, and we even got to sit "outside" on the balcony overlooking, well, JCrew. We continued with the tourist for a day theme by snapping so many photos that a nice lady in the booth next to us asked if it was our first time to the Mall of America. "No, we live in Minnesota," I explained. "We live in St. Paul," Millie corrected me, practically spelling out St. Paul for emphasis. Sheesh.

After a couple of ride at the Park Formerly Known As Camp Snoopy, and some intense Lego time, we ended the day with ice cream and a nap in the car. Divine.
